Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of word-centred derivatology, which complements the achievements of modern socio-political term formation. The process of derivation is the most complex linguistic phenomenon, as it leads to changes in the structure and semantics of the amereican socio-political terminology, which act as the source, forming new concepts, meanings, structures and semantic forms. Derivation is a productive way that reflects the entire mechanism of the functioning of the terminology system, since the derivational analysis of the main grammatical categories of word terms confirms the thesis that the core of any terminology is the noun terms that show the highest productivity. The main feature of derivation as a process of term formation is the emergence of a new term lexeme with a new connotative meaning. A distinctive feature of this phenomenon is that there is a kind of rethinking, a «turn» of the primary meaning of the base word (source word) and its consideration in secondary meaning. The necessity of analysing derivational and connotative processes lies in the fact that at the present stage this linguistic phenomenon, in particular at the level of modern american socio-political termsnology, is considered as one of the most productive means of explicating a professional concept, and understanding the basic derivational paths can help explain important issues of lexicon, semantics of term formation, and illuminate the semantic structure of the special terminology and its cognitive content. It has been established that the derivational potential of socio-political terminology manifests itself in their syntactic transformations, which are manifested in the addition, or rather the insertion, of additional components into terminological units. However, the appearance of an additional component in a terminological unit does not lead to the loss or reinterpretation of its semantic meaning. In our scientific research, we understand semantic derivation as the semantic process of the evolution of a term as a result of the complex interaction of its external and internal linguistic factors. In conclusion, we note that the need to analyse derivational-connotative processes lies in the fact that at the present stage, this linguistic phenomenon, particularly at the level of the modern (american socio-political terminology system – SPT), is considered one of the most productive means of explicating a professional concept, and understanding the basic derivational paths can help explain important issues of lexicon, semantics of term formation, and highlight the semantic structure of the SPT and its cognitive content.
