THE TERM: CONTEMPORARY DIMENSIONS

Keywords: professional communication, term, terminology, institutionalization of knowledge, terminology standardization

Abstract

The article provides a comprehensive theoretical analysis of contemporary approaches to understanding the term as a multidimensional phenomenon shaped by scientific and technological evolution, the institutionalization of knowledge, and the standardization of professional communication. The study is based on the examination of the historical transformation of the specialized language of science and the development of terminological thought from the classical normative-standardization paradigm to socio-communicative and socio-cognitive models. It is argued that a term cannot be reduced to an isolated linguistic unit or a purely logical representation of a concept, since its formation occurs at the intersection of cognitive processes of categorization and conceptualization, linguistic nomination, and the socially institutionalized practices of scientific communities. The article analyses key concepts in contemporary Terminology: the normative-standardization model (E. Wüster, H. Felber), the institutionalmanagerial approach (S.-E. Wright, G. Budin), the socio-communicative theory (M. T. Cabré), the socio-cognitive approach (R. Temmerman), and the historical-evolutionary perspective (H. Picht). It is demonstrated that within these frameworks the term functions as an instrument for organizing and systematizing specialized knowledge, ensuring precision in professional communication, coordinating collective scientific activity, and harmonizing domain-specific terminological systems in the globalized information environment. The study proves that the term operates as a structural element of the informational infrastructure of science, ensuring definitional stability, conceptual coherence, possibilities for interdisciplinary integration, and multilingual knowledge transfer. The synthesis of various theoretical paradigms makes it possible to formulate an integrative understanding of the term as a historically conditioned, cognitively motivated, and socially institutionalized unit of specialized language that combines linguistic, cognitive, communicative, and normative dimensions and performs a systemorganizing function.
