Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the types of nominations of legal terms and their properties in the modern Ukrainian and English languages. The main attention is paid to classifying and highlighting the features of the contrasted language units. The methodological basis of the study is a complex, contrastive multi-paradigmal analysis. The main method of the study is the contrastive method. The following groups of methods were also applied in it: 1) linguistic methods: structural method, representative method of scientific description, method of continuous sampling; 2) translation methods: communicative, semantic, method of transformations; 3) general scientific methods of analysis, synthesis, induction, deduction, comparison, hypotheses; 4) law industry method – comparative law method used for comparing of the law terms under analysis in frames of each functional-semantic field of law terms separately. The model of the functional-semantic field was choosen for systematization of the terms under analysis. There were defined types of nominations in the contrasted term systems. Allomorphic and isomorphic properties of the compared legal terms of the Ukrainian and English languages were characterized at the different levels of the language hierarchy as well as in frames of different linguistic paradigms. Their meaningfulness for translation of legal terms was characterized in this article. There were described conceptual-semantic, linguistic (lexico-grammatical, structural, functionalsemantic and functional-stylistic), as well as psycholinguistic properties of the contrasted legal terms in Ukrainian and English. The number of analyzed legal terms in both contrasted languages are created on the basis of the first nomination. Terms formed based on a secondary nomination are typically the results of metaphorical or metonymic transfer. In both contrasted languages, the main types of nominations of legal terms are lexemes (predominantly, nouns, adjectives and verbs), word formation and structural models of word combinations, phraseological units and idioms. Functional-semantic models are more typical for English legal terms. The article characterizes the specificity of terms-internationalisms of the specified subject, the features of their use in the compared languages. Multidisciplinary terms of the legal field in Ukrainian and English were identified and investigated, as well.
