Abstract

This article is focused on the study of special features of structural organization of lexico-semantic field “FLOWER” in modern English, carried out using the system-functional, the semantic and the structural approaches. Relevance of the study is due to the need to explore different approaches to systemize the vocabulary of the English language, among which a special place is occupied by lexical-semantic fields. The obtained data shows that the lexico-semantic field is defined as a set of lexical units which are united by common sense and reflect conceptual, substantive or functional similarity being denoted phenomena.

Starting position for all lexico-semantic fields share common semantic features, which bring together all the field units and is usually expressed by lexeme of summary values. It is established that the lexico-semantic field consists of nominative units which form two levels: the core and the periphery of the lexico-semantic field “FLOWER” in modern English. The core is formed with the terms or the widespread nominative units. The periphery is formed with the names of exotic flowers and of the extinct ones as well as with Latin and parallel folk names of flowers.

The characteristics of the relations between lexical units denoting flowers in modern English are revealed. Three hierarchic levels have been singled out inside the lexico-semantic field “FLOWER”: the lexico-semantic field, the lexico-semantic group (microfield), lexico-semantic subgroup. It has been revealed that lexico-semantic field “FLOWER” consists of 10 lexico-semantic groups, 8 subgroups in the lexico-semantic group “Place of Sprouting” and 4 subgroups in the lexico-semantic group “Flowers in Art”. All lexical units of the field are interrelated. The formation as well as functioning of the components of lexico-semantic field “FLOWER” has been outlined. Names of flowers can be of the English origin or borrowed from other languages. English vocabulary denoting flowers was increased due to the borrowings from Latin, French, Spanish, Persian, Brazilian, Indonesian, Greek languages.
