LINGUO-CULTURAL FEATURES OF STABLE COMPARATIVE UNITS WITH PHYTONYM COMPONENT IN ENGLISH
Abstract
The article investigates the essence and main features of stable comparative units usage, their place in modern linguistics and their role in forming of the language picture of the world. Comparison is one of the oldest kinds of intellectual activities, which helps people to learn new phenomenon, to analyze them and to contrast them with familiar things. So comparison gives us an opportunity to get to know the world which surrounds us. We use various locutions, among which similes occupy one of the leading places, to describe these new realia. Comparative phraseological units are language units, characterized by meaning integrity and structure stability. The aim of this article is to analyze the peculiarities of stable comparative units with phytonym component in English. Phytonym is a lexico-semantic alternative of a word, presented as a natural name. Phytonyms make stable units much more expressive and clear for foreigners. Every culture has its own national plants which can be both object and subject of phraseological units. But there are also some plants which personify the same things in different countries. The ancient tradition when any person considered himself as a part of nature and provided representatives of animal and plant world with human features explains the high amount of comparatives with phytonym component in any language. In this article we demonstrate the fact that phytonyms reveal traditions, customs, believes and of course history of different cultures, they take part in the language picture of the world forming and can be described as the link between language and mentality. English comparative units used to describe people's inner world and appearance are analyzed in this article to prove this fact. Functional features of phytonyms, the context of their usage, some additional content, paradigmatic relations affirm their importance as language elements taking part in forming the language picture of the world.
