LEXICO-SEMANTIC MEANS OF EXPRESSION OF ARTISTIC REALIА IN ENGLISH LITERARY TEXTS
Abstract
The article deals with the research of artistic realiа nomination in English literary discourse. Being an integral part of life of any society, art is considered as social and cultural phenomenon, which is marked by universal, multifunctional, and multi-aspect approaches to its research. It is widely reflected in the space of literary discourse, performing the role of both occasional background element and plot-forming unit. In the article an attention is focused on lexico-semantic means of expression of artistic phenomenon, which has a generalized meaning and plays the role of archseme of lexico-semantic field, including lexico-semantic groups “music”, “painting”, “sculpture”, “architecture”, “theatre”, etc. The status of notions “art”, “music”, and “painting” in the artistic lexico-semantic field is determined. Music and painting as two most frequently used in English literary texts lexico-semantic groups from lexico-semantic field of art are considered in the article. Being of different presentation nature, they have adherent aspects of verbalization both in lexicographical sources and in the space of English literary texts. Lexeme “music” as basic nomination of audial arts lexico-semantic group has a synonymic row including lexemes “melody”, “tune”, “piece”, “note”, “song”, “tone”. Lexico-semantic group of visual arts is presented by basic nominations “picture” and “painting” and is supplemented by synonymic row of lexemes “drawing”, “portrait”, “landscape”, “sketch”.
Special attention is paid to secondary nominations of artistic realiа, which are actualized in the process of speech and are not fixed in the lexicographical sources. An attempt to find universal criteria of artistic realiа actualization in English literary texts is performed in terms of music and painting realiа verbalization. Thus, artistic realіа actualization in English literary texts was revealed according to such criteria: title, genre, author/presenter, way of presentation. The results of the research confirmed that artistic realiа secondary nominations are decoded on the basis of literary text recipients’ background knowledge from the plurality of possible meanings.
