Abstract

The article presents the attempt to model the British linguistic world image of XVIII – XXІ centuries applying ethnolingustic and linguistic-cultural surveys. The paper considers the transformation of the linguistic view of the world in the context of the analysis of the semantic structure modification of the lexeme wife using the lexicographical sources of Britain during the last four centuries. The definitions of the lexeme under study are schematically given in the chart in both the original language and in the Ukrainian translation. Using the systemic lexicographical analysis of the linguistic view of the world the attempt is made to connect national cultural features of the English language with social ethnic peculiarities of the native speakers. The point of view at the lexicographical products as the treasury of cultural and historical memory of the nation is given. The semantic structure of the word is considered through the tight connection with the hierarchy of ideas in the mental world model. The modifications of the lexeme structural components, the loss of the existing and the acquirement of new meanings and their shades are bound with both the language development and with the extralinguistic factors such as the development of the community, social, political and historical events. At the same time the attempt to analyze the usage of the lexeme wife in the British media is made. This media usage is compared with lexicographic definitions of the relevant period.
