EXPRESSIVE VALUE OF CONCEPTS OF THE AUTHOR’S WORLD MODEL IN THE NOVEL “MOBY DICK” BY H. MELVILLE
Abstract
The article deals with the problem of the study of fiction as an independent object, development of the technique of analyses of individual style peculiarities of the author from the view of cognitive linguistics and the study of the specific author’s world model which reflects the author’s choice of conceptual priorities. Different peripheral concepts adjoining the nuclear one are described as viewed from the point of their closeness to it. The stylistic and metaphorical peculiarities of the conscepts are introduced in the article. The nuclear concept of the novel being SEA, we study the verbalization of the peripheral concepts such as SHORE, SEAMEN, FLORA and FAUNA, VESSELS, NATURAL PHENOMENA. Besides the direct nomination such as names of professions connected with the sea the author uses different stylistic devices. Among them there are metaphors, epithets and similes. But the most vivid are antitheses at the textual, conceptual level, for example SEAMEN compared to LANDMEN to show the glory of seamen profession. . Comparing the means of representation of the concept in the language and in the language of the individual (in our case - the language of the writer) is to determine the basic meaning of the concept in national conceptual and, in addition, to identify individual principles of language material in individual conceptual writer. Thus, we describe concepts according to the following parameters: concept activator; context of their use; features of the text; stylistic means for activating and demonstration of its importance in building a model of the author’s world.
