THE METHODS OF ABBREVIATIONS-TABOO AND EUPHEMISM TRANSLATION IN MEDICAL DISCOURSE
Abstract
The methods of abbreviations-taboo and euphemism translation in medical discourse are under analysis. The process of the abbreviations translation is performed on the basis of medical discourse study. The research of the deep structure of condensing units is a key in the study of their correct transformation in a process of the interpretation. Division of the abbreviation constituents allows us to study the translation methods of abbreviations considering their pragmatics. Units that are abbreviated as taboo vocabulary are the concepts, terms and words of ordinary life, they are marked “forbidden” issues causing euphemisms, such items perform professional medical discourse that is full of jargonisms that group taboo vocabulary. In our further research, it is necessary to consider the reasons for the use of euphemisms that function along with the taboos. This unit often functions as jargonism and it is translated by the explication of meaning or transliteration of the source language term. The text, consisting of non-standard language, should be performed senceto- sence, considering the main compression units, the abbreviations should to be politically correct and sometimes euphemisms substitute them. Euphemisms as phraseological units are performed in groups that represent death and related phenomena, social evil, crime, human vices, especially drunkenness, euphemisms, indicating poverty, difficult financial situation, units that refer to mental and physical disabilities, phraseology euphemisms denoting status or function in physiology, including naked person description, “polite units of condensation” related to sexuality, they all require descriptive translation, explication of the individual components for the correct translation considering their contextual meaning.
