SEMANTIC PECULIARITIES OF THE POLITICAL CORRECTNESS PRINCIPLE IN PRESENT-DAY ENGLISH
Abstract
This paper is devoted to the semantic peculiarities of the political correctness principle in Tom Stoppard’s trilogy “The Coast of Utopia”. Attention is focused on the combination of interaction and coexistence of different ethnic groups within the border of the same country, particularly Great Britain, where numerous ethnic conflicts, oppositions and misunderstandings are the peculiar features of xenophobe attitude to “alien” ethnics. The author examines the reasons of hostility of “own” as exclusive and superior people towards the solving of troubles of others “alien” ethnics that can cause xenophobe as one of the kinds of ethnic identity. Cognition and acceptance of the existing counterpart between the ethnic majority of the British origin and the representatives of the ethnic minorities is defined as the first step to solving the existing problem and overcoming of racial and ethnic differentiation. Blaming and an attempt of avoiding the xenophobe proceedings can be highlighted in the change of attitude of representatives of the upper walks of society towards the ethnic minorities and intercultural relationships that make creating new forms of communication and cooperation. The result asserts that the problem of political correctness conception of English-speaking world-view deals not only with aspects of political discourse but also touches the choice of language units for denoting the disabled people, the elders, and the problems of ethnic minorities. It is postulated the idea that the tolerant attitude to the problems of ethnic minorities, recognition of equal rights of women with men in a society, following the etiquette priorities in communication can be acknowledged as the main perspectives towards the realization of the political correctness principle. Tolerance as a respectful attitude towards the judgments of others, their beliefs, traditions and forms of behavior constitutes the fundamental feature of civilization and the level of political culture.
