Abstract

The article offers a critical analysis of the not yet published translation into Russian of the historical novel in the poems of the prominent Ukrainian poetess L.V. Kostenko “Marusya Churai”, made by Roman Kudrov. Several sections of this translation have been analyzed, including 1, 4, 7 and 9, provided by the translator himself. Readers’ interest in L. Kostenko’s novel does not fade with time, although this work has long been well known to Ukrainian-speaking readers, but today there is reason to talk about the second wave of attention to it, which is related to foreign language interpretations, including Russian, by A. Lerner, O. Aulov, R. Kudrov. All these translators accurately reproduce the novel’s plot. But, in addition to the plot, when translating a large novel text requires considerable attention and skill, such features as the translation of certain words and expressions characteristic of the Ukrainian language, and if we talk about a poem, then the reproduction of rhythm and verse size of the original source. Based on a solid foundation of modern translation studies, the existing requirements for the adequacy of translation could be defined as meaningful and formal, but to specify their own observations, they are broken down by criteria: compliance with the title of the work, its sections / subdivisions, proper names and plot moves and events, linguistic and stylistic drawing, poetic features in the translated text. Considerations are given on the adequacy of the translation of the titles of chapters 1, 7 and 9 of the novel in translation, the transfer in Russian of the proper names of the heroes of the novel. The moments connected with the reproduction of the rhythmic melody of the original text in the translation, as well as the linguistic and stylistic features of the original work are emphasized. The errors in the analyzed translation due to unsuccessful word usage, the creation of lexical artificiality in some Russian translations, excessive use of particles, etc. are demonstrated. The errors in the analyzed translation due to unsuccessful word usage, the creation of lexical artificiality in some Russian translations, excessive use of particles, etc. are demonstrated. The authors of the translations make considerable efforts in the process of foreign-language reincarnation of the original source, fulfilling an important and honorable cultural mission, but it is too early to say that L. Kostenko’s unique historical novel has a worthy foreign-language analogue.
