REPRODUCTION OF THE FUNCTION OF EXPRESSIVE SYNTAX IN THE STORY OF SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE “THE ADVENTURE OF SPECKLED BAND”
Abstract
The article is devoted to the problems of transferring the functions of the expressive syntax of an English-language work of fiction text in the Ukrainian translation by Mykola Dmytrenko of Arthur Conan Doyle’s story “The Adventure of the Speckled Band”. The article covers the concepts of “expression"” and “expressive syntax”. Peculiarities of English-language fiction and aspects of its translation are considered, in particular, theoretical approaches to the translation of expressive syntax in fiction are analyzed. The question of aesthetic function is considered and this concept has recently attracted more and more attention of linguists. The article analyzes English-language fiction that have their own distinctive linguistic features and are generally determined by several factors: broad metaphor, imagery of language units of almost all levels, including syntactic. In addition, the units of expressive syntax and their functions are considered in Arthur Conan Doyle’s story “The Adventure of the Speckled Band”. The components of emotional syntax, peculiar to the Ukrainian language, but not peculiar to the English language, and the ellipse technique common in fiction and colloquial language are considered. It is investigated that incoherent complex sentences with enumerative relations can consist of two sentences, and can include three or more simple sentences and are classified as follows: causal, explanatory, explanatory-explanatory, comparative-opposite, conditional-descriptive. It is investigated that noun sentences are widely used in fiction, allowing to create concise, capacious, figurative and very dynamic (with the use of verb nouns) verbal pictures. The article singles out such models of source text reduction as elliptical sentences, omission, unextended sentences, conjunction, nominative sentences, language parcelling, as well as such models of source text expansion as repetition, polysyndeton, parallel constructions. By means of comparative analysis of source and target texts, the peculiarities of reproduction of the studied syntactic units in the stylistic expressive function in the Ukrainian translation of Mykola Dmytrenko are analyzed. The findings of the study show that in order to preserve the expression of the work at the syntactic level, the translator sometimes changes the type of syntactic construction, or resorts to grammatical, syntactic and stylistic transformations of the source text.
