USE OF PHRASAL VERBS IN ENGLISH
Abstract
In the offered scientific article features of use of phrasal verbs in English are considered. Phrasal verbs are considered to be polynomial lexical units, consist of verbs that express vital concepts and have a high frequency of use, and adverbs that indicate the direction of action or postpositions. Phrasal verbs are an integral semantic unit that is one member of a sentence. Most often, the meaning of phrasal verbs differs significantly from the meaning of basic verbs. In terms of communicative value, they are referred to as а conversational style. The importance of studying phrasal verbs is considered significant. To confirm this, a dialogue has been presented, which clearly demonstrates the affiliation of phrasal verbs to the conversational style. The use of phrasal verbs is always aimed at colloquial speech, “living”, everyday English, that is, the language used by most of its speakers. The purposeful use of phrasal verbs will avoid certain obsolete expressions and will significantly enrich speech with words and synonyms of the conversational style. The significance and high frequency of use of phrasal verbs lies in the recognition and ease of use of elements of phrasal verbs. It has been found that a proper knowledge of this layer of English vocabulary allows the speaker not only to express a large number of concepts, but also to do so using a minimum of initial elements. Phrasal verbs are polysemous. The ambiguity involved does not always determine the obvious semantic connection. The initial values are the values of displacement in space and the result of the action. Therefore, one of their components is a large number of verbs with the meaning of movement in space. It has been found that the composition of phrasal verbs includes a verb of high frequency of use (to be, to do, to bring, to carry, to give, to make, to get, to take, to put, to set, to keep, to hold, to throw, to come, to go, to fall, to turn, to see, to look and others) and one (up, down and others) or several (up from behind, out from under and others) postpositions (particles formed from homonymous adverbs). Phrasal verbs can also have prepositionі. Representing the conversational style, phrasal verbs will contribute to the naturalness and diversity of communication.
