EMOTIONALLY COLORED VOCABULARY IN THE NOVEL “JACOB’S CENTURY” BY VOLODYMYR LYS

Abstract

Based on the material of Volodymyr Lys’ novel “Jacob’s Century”, the emotionally colored vocabulary is analyzed as one of the means of subjectivization of the artistic text and an original expression of the writer’s idiostyle. It has been found out that such vocabulary is primarily represented by expressive words, i.e. words that even outside the context of the work contain an emotional and evaluative component. The largest number of emotionally colored words is found in the group of verb vocabulary. Noun and adjectival units were also analyzed. Emphasis is placed on the dominance of words with a negative emotional coloring, which is connected with the problems of the work. Among the sources of replenishment of emotionally colored units, the living speech environment is highlighted. On the basis of rich factual material, it is proved that colloquial lexemes that are neutral in oral speech, entering other styles, in particular the artistic one, bring the mood of the communicative space from which they came, respectively they strengthen the expressiveness of the text. The lexemes that acquire an evaluative connotation in the process of word formation are also analyzed. Diminutives and augmentatives are fixed both in the dialogues of characters and in the author’s speech. The means of creating such units have been defined. It was found out that suffixation has priority in the expression of tenderness and rudeness. Among noun diminutive suffixes in the artistic language of the novel we singled out -к/k-, -ок/ok-, -ик/yk-, -очк/ochk-, -ечк-/echk, -оньк/on’k-, -еньк/en’k-, among adjectival ones – -еньк/en’k-, -есеньк/esen’k-, -юсіньк/iusin’k-, among adverbial ones – -есеньк/esen’k-, -еньк/en’k-. The most productive in the group of negatively evaluative formants is suffix -иськ/ys’k-, there are several examples of using suffix -ищ/yshch-. It was observed on specific examples that the meaning of word-forming variants often depends on the context and can change to the opposite: diminutive forms convey irony or a dismissively satirical meaning, and rude words express a positive attitude towards the object of description. The study of emotionally colored vocabulary as an important component of Volodymyr Lys’ individual authorial style of writing is also relevant to the material of other writer’s works and this fact determines the perspective of further research.
