METHODS OF COMPLEX ANALYSIS OF LEXICAL COMBINATIONS IN CONTEMPORARY BRITISH MILITARY FICTION TEXTS

Abstract

The article focuses on the identification of the main methods that are useful to use conducting the complex analysis of literary texts, in particular contemporary British military fiction texts. The research is based on the ground of pragma-stylistic, pragma-discourse and contextual interpretative approaches. The peculiarities of the syntagmatic and paradigmatic analyses were generalized, the importance of the use of epidegmatic analysis in the study of the contemporary fiction texts was emphasized, the correlation of syntagmatic, paradigmatic and epidegmatic analyses of lexical combinations was demonstrated on the example of British military fiction texts. Analysis of the lexical combinations of a literary text was conducted taking into account all types of relations between the words (syntagmatic, paradigmatic and epidegmatic), mainly: componential, lexicographical, contextualsituational, discourse, interpretative methods of analysis. On the whole, syntagmatic methodology enables the detailed analysis of the lexical elements in the British military fiction texts by means of studying their combinations and functions in the context. The use of paradigmatic methodology in the analysis of contemporary British military fiction texts helps to define the common and differential features between the words and, consequently, to unite them into different lexical groups, makes it possible to define the peculiarities of functioning of the denotative and connotative elements in the meanings of separate words considering the context they are used in. Epidegmatic analysis is quite important as well, since it enables research of the dominant expressive-stylistic means and tropes which demonstrate the main directions of the figurative sense in the text, the ways of the associative enrichment of the lexical combinations and interpretation of their implicit meaning. The article demonstrates the close correlation of syntagmatic, paradigmatic and epidegmatic analyses, proves the necessity of their complex combination during the research of the lexical-semantic space of the British military fiction texts, taking into account intra-lingual and extra-lingual peculiarities.
