FEATURES OF THE INFLUENCE OF ENGLISH NAUTICAL SLANG ON THE CULTURE AND PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIPS OF SEAFARERS
Abstract
The article is devoted to the analysis of nautical slang in the English language and its influence on maritime culture and society. Nautical slang in the English language is applied in the complex speech of seafarers and employees of maritime industries. This form of specialized language is of great importance for both scientific and practical purposes. It reflects the cultural, social and professional aspects of life at sea and plays an essential role in communication between crew members and other participants in the marine environment. However, the study of this type of slang has not yet received proper scientific coverage, and the practical aspects of its use require further study and development. This study aims to analyze the main features of nautical slang in the English language, including its origins, main thematic groups and specific expressions used by seafarers. The study of nautical slang allows for a deeper understanding of the linguistic culture of the maritime community and its influence on general English-language communication. The main thematic groups of nautical slang are analyzed, based on terminology related to seafaring, navigation, tools and equipment. Nautical slang has been found to cover a wide range of topics reflecting the professional and everyday aspects of maritime life. The origin and historical context of each thematic group of slang are determined, as well as their use in modern seafaring is established. It has been found that many nautical slang terms have ancient origins and have survived to this day, however, some terms may have modern adaptations or new meanings. The relationship between the thematic groups of nautical slang and social and professional characteristics of maritime communities is established. It is shown that nautical slang not only reflects the technical aspects of seafaring, but also contributes to the creation of a sense of community and increases the interaction between seafarers. The role of nautical slang in communication at sea and its influence on the formation of maritime identity and culture are analyzed. It has been established that nautical slang contributes not only to effective communication and cohesion of maritime communities, but also plays an important role in the passing of cultural traditions from generation to generation.
