THE FEATURES OF СOLLOQUIAL VOCABULARY REPRESENTATION IN THE TRANSLATION OF CHARLOTTE BRONTË’S NOVEL “JANE EYRE”
Abstract
The article examines the peculiarities of translating сolloquial vocabulary in Charlotte Brontë’s novel “Jane Eyre”. The topic is relevant because it is necessary to analyse the linguistic and stylistic means that ensure the adequate transmission of culturally marked elements of Victorian era everyday life to another linguistic environment. Studying this aspect enables us to identify patterns in the reproduction of national and cultural language components and contributes to a deeper understanding of the interrelationship between language, culture and translation. This research aims to identify methods for translating сolloquial vocabulary. The paper takes a comprehensive approach, combining comparative, linguocultural and stylistic analysis. The source material comprises the original text of Brontë’s novel and Ukrainian translations by various translators. Particular attention has been given to the translation of the names of household items, clothing, food and forms of address, which reflect the social hierarchy and interpersonal relationships between the characters. The main translation techniques have been classified, including concretisation, generalisation, modulation, omission, the use of translation equivalents, cultural adaptation, transliteration and transcription. It has been established that the choice of translation method depends largely on the cultural context, the stylistic features of the genre, and the translator’s intention to strike a balance between accuracy and artistic expressiveness. The research results show that accurately translating сolloquial vocabulary is key to shaping a holistic image of the era, preserving the authenticity of the characters’ speech and conveying the author’s unique style. The most effective approach combines different methods to ensure the translation is both accurate and natural. This combination provides a deeper reflection of the author’s linguistic worldview, preserves the text’s aesthetic value, and creates an authentic portrayal of everyday nineteenth-century English life. These results can be applied to further translation studies focusing on the linguocultural adaptation of literary texts and the reproduction of cultural realia in translation.
