SEMANTICS OF THE COLORONYM RED IN THE FAIRY TALES OF FRIDA SCHANZ

Abstract

The article is dedicated to the memory of the popular German writer and translator of the first half of the last century, Frida Schanz. Her creative output includes over 60 works for children and youth. Particular attention is paid to the semantics of the coloronym red. I found that the color red occupies an intermediate level between white and blue. In Frieda’s tales red acquires a certain ideological and aesthetic significance, indirectly indicating the confrontation between the poor and the wealthy, the new and the old, the earthly and the otherworldly, and also marks the struggle for the honor and freedom of the German people, the energy of life, love, creativity, etc. Participates in the creation of images of the earth’s surface, the power and beauty of the animal world, female beauty, and the stages of the formation of children’s and adolescent feelings (infatuation, adoration, addiction, service, happiness, love). Ten shades of red are distinguished: 1) fiery, 2) purple, 3) pink, 4) delicate pink, 5) pale pink, 6) red Rotlocke, 7) copper (golden red), 8) reddish, 9) purple, 10) ruby. A fiery hue warns orphans about a treasure hidden in the ground, nominates the hair of a proud noble woman, conveys a new feeling – earthly joy; purple informs about the ripeness and heat treatment of rose hips, the blood of game, social status; pink tunes in to the material stability of minerals in time-space, the health of rural half-orphans, or the composition of glass; soft pink and pale pink indicate a change in the emotional state of frightened orphans; red identifies a girl of extraterrestrial origin, a lover, and her functions; copper emphasizes the radiance of curly hair against the background of a narrow blue ribbon and at the same time physical strength against the background of an asthenic child’s physique; reddish characterizes the archaic nature of minerals; crimson manifests the physical manifestation of the farmer’s emotional state; ruby records the list of earthly names of children. The idea of the usual semantics of the coloronym red is confirmed, the semantic development of the element is traced.
