MILITARY ENGLISH ABBREVIATIONS STRUCTURAL AND SEMANTIC FEATURES

Abstract

The article addresses the structural and semantic features of English military abbreviations. Recognized as a universal expression of language economy, the abbreviations facilitate precise and efficient communication in military contexts where brevity and clarity are paramount. The presented study emphasizes the critical role of standardization and organization of abbreviations across various branches of armed forces. The research analyzes a corpus of military abbreviations selected from specialized military literature, dictionaries, official military standards, and digital sources. It highlights the diversity of military terms, which encompass not only specific military concepts but also colloquial military vocabulary, reflecting the social aspects of military discourse. The article discusses linguistic properties of military terminology, including unambiguity, neutrality, definitional clarity, and systematization within the terminology system. The article reviews classifications of military terms by semantic content, usage domain, and historical-lexicological criteria. It identifies productive word-formation methods in military vocabulary such as affixation, compounding, conversion, and abbreviation, noting the complex combinations of these methods in creating abbreviations and acronyms. The study also addresses the challenges in typological classification due to structural variety and multiple abbreviation techniques. Stylistic aspects are considered, noting the presence of both neutral and expressive abbreviations, with some terms exhibiting national and cultural specificity within various military communities. The article concludes by emphasizing the importance of comprehensive structural and semantic characterization of military abbreviations to facilitate translation adequacy of military discourse. This study fills a gap in the research on military abbreviations, providing valuable insights for linguists, translators, and military linguists engaged in the analysis and application of specialized military language.
