THE ACTUALIZATION OF THE CONCEPT EDUCATION IN BARACK OBAMA’S PRESIDENTIAL DISCOURSE
Abstract
The study provides an overview of the domestic and foreign studies on presidential discourse within the framework of the humanitarian paradigm. Attention is focused on the cognitive component of the mainstreaming of the concept of EDUCATION in the discourse of Barack Obama. Conceptual metaphor in the presidential discourse is considered as a way of actualization the required images in the mind of the recipient in order to manipulate public opinion. Basic theories of conceptual metaphors were considered. A special place in the work takes a "Great Chain of Being" on which the analysis of conceptual metaphors in Barack Obama’s presidential discourse is based. The study presents a modern interpretation of the presidential discourse, which includes cognitive and communicative component. Education issue is one of the main points in Democrats political program and takes powerful place in Barack Obama presidential discourse as well. Metaphorical conceptualization of the referent Education, in the framework of Barack Obama presidential discourse, brings together major correlates belonging to correlative groups: PHYSICAL OBJECT, CONTAINER, HUMAN. Cross-mapping of specific meanings related to correlative field of PHYSICAL OBJECT on an abstract referent EDUCATION forms conceptual metaphors EDUCATION – is an ARTIFACT. Correlative group PHYSICAL OBJECT includes conceptual metaphor EDUCATION – is the SUBJECT; EDUCATION – is CURRENCY; EDUCATION – is TRAIN; Education – is a NECESSARY THING for life; EDUCATION – the KEY to success. Correlates projection of cognitive metaphors in correlative group CONTAINER on referent EDUCATION creates several different conceptual metaphors, where the meanings are distributed on the basis of: conceptual metaphor EDUCATION – is a CONTAINER, inside which there is a kind of opportunity; EDUCATION – is a CONTAINER, within there are problems; EDUCATION – is a CONTAINER into which we invest. Cross-mapping of specific meanings related to correlative group HUMAN on abstract referent EDUCATION creates conceptual metaphors: EDUCATION – is a PERSON, who gives opportunities and EDUCATION – is a PERSON that you want to encourage. Among correlative areas that Barack Obama attracts to percept referent EDUCATION, most metaphorical potential refers to groups – PHYSICAL OBJECTS (the largest distribution of meanings in the metaphor), and the smallest – HUMAN.
