THE CONCEPT SOUVENIR IN THE LANGUAGE PICTURE OF THE WORLD (ON THE EXAMPLE OF FRENCH METAPHORIC WORD USAGE)
Abstract
The article is devoted to the problem of actualization of the concept SOUVENIR in modern French Linguistic Model of the World (on the example of French metaphoric wordusing).
Metaphor appears as mode of cognition and reality conceptualization. According to D. Lakoff engaging metaphor for understanding the experience is one of the greatest triumphs of the human mind. Rational thinking is mainly based on the metaphorical models. Any adequate approach to rationality requires the use of the imagination and the latter is inseparable from the metaphorical reasoning. Metaphors as linguistic expressions are possible precisely because there are metaphors in a person’s conceptual system. Our conceptual system thus plays a central role in defining our everyday realities. Based on the classification of D. Lakoff and M. Johnson, we have discovered several types of ontological metaphors, allowing to talk about SOUVENIR as a certain entity, to characterize them, to give them an evaluative character.
The spatial metaphor indicates the place where memories exist in metaphorical picture of the world, and it may be: brain, memory, heart, liver, throat, cheeks and body.
The analysis of examples allowed to identify several types of structural metaphors when one concept is structurally ordered in terms of another. We have discovered 40 verbs, pointing to acts committed by SOUVENIR. They wake up (s’éveiller), come up in man’s memory, sing (chanter), pursue (poursuivre), give tears (arracher des larmes), pain, terrify (terrifier).
