COGNITIVE ANALYSIS OF RENDERING NONSENSE WORDS IN THE ENGLISH-UKRAINIAN TRANSLATIONS OF THE POEM «JABBERWOCKY» BY LEWIS CARROLL
Abstract
The article presents the results of implementing instruments of the conceptual blending theory in the analysis of English-Ukrainian translations of L. Carroll’s nonsense words. These instruments of analysis explain cognitive mechanisms which trigger activation of the non-conventional lexical meaning incongruent with its conventional linguistic form and thus ensure communicatively successful translation. Communicatively successful translation of lexical nonsense activates in the mind of the addressee grammatical and lexical input mental spaces. The elements of the grammatical input space activated by grammatical and lexical-grammatical morphemes together with the syntactic structure of the stanza evoke expectations of the appropriate lexical morphemes to which they are conventionally attached. In the lexical input mental space lexical roots of these morphological forms do not activate any conventional content. This incongruity sanctions recognition of the humorous stimulus. In the process of backward projection to the input mental spaces lexical roots are reassessed against the background of encyclopaedic knowledge and broader linguistic context and they are reconciled with their grammatical forms. Communicative success of translation depends, on the one hand, on the morphological transparency of grammatical structure, and, on the other hand, on the degree of contrariety of the senses created by uniting the incongruent structural-semantic elements of the nonsense words (two roots, roots and affixes) or by variating their phonetic components. Applying the instrumental notions of the conceptual blending theory in translation analysis builds the algorithm of analysis to avoid subjectivity.
