REPRESENTATION OF EMOTIONAL AND EXPRESSIVE CHARACTER IN TRANSLATION OF ENGLISH POLITICAL DISCOURSE (BASED ON POLITICAL DEBATES)
Abstract
Oratorical speech of politicians is a way of manifesting their linguistic identity. The word is the main weapon of a politician. Political activity is a linguistic activity. A politician speaks to voters during an election campaign or to citizens about a public issue or urgent problem. The winner is the one who can convince, expressing thoughts successfully, confidently, engagingly, while using stylistic, lexical and grammatical language means, make public speaking especially effective and efficient. Emotional and expressive means serve to create an effect on the recipient. They can perform an aesthetic function, that is, to relate to the beautiful, or a reasoned function – to manipulate ordinary citizens, that is, those who create public opinion and are potential voters. Pre-election speech is often characterized by a detachment, remoteness from reality, from the expectations of citizens. Focusing on ideology, making political bets, the speaker seeks to gain power. It is really difficult to imagine a political struggle without political discourse. But from a broader point of view, political discourse can be treated quite simply as a public speech on public affairs. In this sense, any form of expression of views, which takes as its object the management of state institutions, politicians, various branches powers of the state, issues of public interest of society, is a political discourse. Therefore, such a speech reveals a person’s concern about governing the country, the people. We will consider political speech as a means of influence that aims to make the public act, think and believe. The political rostrum appears as a place of struggle to gain the votes of citizens and the support of political parties. Theatricality, mastery of oratory, the art of persuasion are the key to the success of a political speaker. The study of methods of achieving expressiveness becomes a necessary stage in the analysis of political discourse, as emotionally expressive language of public speeches outlines the point of view of the author and helps to influence the audience. Recent research has focused on how metaphor shapes attitudes and reasoning, outlining some of the cognitive, affective, and social forces that influence the effectiveness of metaphors in decision-making.
