FORMING THE COMPETENCES OF POST-GRADUATE STUDENTS OF ODESSA STATE ACADEMY OF CIVIL ENGINEERING AND ARCHITECTURE WHILE STUDYING THE ACADEMIC DISCIPLINE “SCIENTIFIC STYLE OF LANGUAGE AND WRITING”

Abstract

The article is based on the teaching experience of the academic discipline “Scientific style of language and writing” to first-year postgraduate students of Odessa state academy of civil engineering and architecture. The syllabus structure and the selection of teaching material for lectures and classes as well as for various assessment procedures are determined by the problems that postgraduate students face during their professional work. During the course of discipline development the universal and professional competences are formed. The article outlines the expected levels of various competences, describes the resources of assessment procedures, typical mistakes and difficulties which post-graduate students have, and analyzes the results of integrating the discipline into the curriculum. The discipline entails studying the theory and developing practical skills. Practical classes involve interactive methods (working in small groups, Case-study). The discipline is indispensable for the students’ successful completion of teacher training and scientific research. Writing a final paper in the form of an article reporting the results of their research work for a scientific journal allows first-year post-graduate students to submit a scientific article for publication. Mastering the discipline “Scientific style of language and writing” by the postgraduate students of the first year of Odesa State Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture is important for their successful completion of the third level of higher professional education, teaching practice, research and passing the State Final Certification. Postgraduate students receive a fairly complete theoretical training and develop practical skills and abilities to produce scientific texts of various styles and genres.
