PRAGMATIC ANALYSIS OF STEREOTYPICAL UNITS OF SCIENTIFIC DISCOURSE IN THE UKRAINIAN-ENGLISH TRANSLATION

Abstract

The paper considers the concept of stereotypical character of scientific discourse as a unity of compositional structure, similarity of functions of compositional blocks and micro blocks as well as the presence of typical linguistic constructions for realization of certain functions. The paper analyzes pragmatic potential of linguistic stereotypical units of the Ukrainian scientific discourse in the aspect of translation. In accordance with the classification of I. Speniuk, discursive strategies are divided into 3 groups, in particular, the strategy of expressing one’s own opinion, the strategy of taking into account different views, the strategy of expressing “other people’s” views. Each strategy is implemented by means of its own discursive practices. Analysis of 160 stereotypical units taken from five Ukrainian research papers has revealed a direct dependence between the chosen strategy and the choice of linguistic stereotypical units. The paper also illustrates the examples of linguistic stereotypical units the author uses depending on the character of the implemented discursive practice. While choosing discursive practice of emphatic expression of one’s own attitude, the author uses the following linguistic stereotypical units: варто підкреслити, що – it is important to note that … /importantly, переважним чином – particularly/of particular interest etc. To realize the discursive practice of implication of one’s own attitude, the author chooses denial followed by the explanation by using such stereotypical units as: через те, що – because of; відповідно до – due to; завдяки – owing to. Combination of discursive practices of a reasoned consent and implication of one’s own attitude takes place with the help of stereotypical units since and naturally. Discursive practice of partial consent is realized with the help of linguistic stereotypical units більш-менш – more or less, залежно від – it depends, певним чином – in some ways/somehow. Discursive strategy of expressing other peoples’ views occurs more often in oral scientific discourse than in written one. This statement refers mostly to the discursive practice of opposition, assuming the opposition of personal pronouns we and they. In this way the author demonstrates, different from other researchers, point of view concerning the studied issue.
