THE PERСEPTION OF THE SPANISH NATURE IN THE NOVEL “FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS” BY ERNEST HEMINGWAY
Abstract
The interest of one nations to the others has always been present at all stages of the formation of national identity of any ethnic group and has always had different reasons: geographical position, climate, trade, war. No people can develop in isolation from the rest of the world and an influential role of external factors on a formation of any nation proves that. For one reason or another a mass migration has been led to, which, in turn, has caused clashes of cultures and aroused an interest of learning of other languages, traditions and customs. At the present stage of human development, we can state that blurring of borders between states, widely accessible tourism and the thirst for knowledge of the world have enhanced the study of cultural features of different ethnic groups. At the same time, the question of national self-preservation of ethnic identity in the processes of intercultural communication arises. Linguoimagology, a new direction of modern linguistic studies, focuses on studying of the reflection of vision of one nations in the eyes of other nations. To one degree or another, vision and perception of one nations by others always involve evaluation, either positive or negative. However, perception and evaluation of something “other” activates the vision of “self”. The aim of the article is to analyse linguoimagologically the evaluation of the image of the Spanish nature in the novel “For whom the bell tolls” by Ernest Hemingway. Taking into the account the fact that language is a reflection of culture of a nation, the research of the verbalization of the image the Spanish nature in the novel “For whom the bell tolls” by a famous American writer Ernest Hemingway can have a bilateral nature. According to the main principle of linguoimagology, a research of an image of a nation can characterize not only a country itself, but the one who analyses a country, a writer. Hence, our purpose is to analyse not only the Spanish nature through the prism of the American mentality, but also to study the personality of Ernest Hemingway, as an elite representative of the American ethnical society. The text fragments of the novel “For whom the bell tolls” which reveal the evaluation of the Spanish realities have been chosen as the material of the study. The results of the research can be used in teaching intercultural communication, stylistics, lexicology, the history of the English language, linguoimagology in professional specialties.
