THE NOTION PREDICATE THROUGH INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH
Abstract
The article is to show differences and common features in comprehension of the notion “predicate” in different disciplines. One of its main purposes is to compare various definitions and provide general understanding of predicate based on this analysis. The aspects explored are predicate’s functions, claims and nuclear components. One of the main issues of the research is division of predicates done by S.S. Butorin into two types, semantic and syntactic one. Semantic predicates compose the basis of the automotive analysis of the text when the aim is to find semantic meaning of the utterance or the whole text written in English. By means of semantic predicates and their quantity in the sentence, the machine can transfer pragmatic unit or pragmatic purpose of the original text as one of the means to influence a reader. Besides, the research dwells on the tendencies in applying splitting of a sentence into predicate-argument structure while conducting automatic semantic analysis. The basic element of the analysis is to find and distinguish semantic predicates and their connections with other components of the text’s sentences. In addition, such a model uses eight-level predicate structure, namely: 1) active action verbs; 2) speech activity; 3) verbs of movement; 4) sense verbs; 5) mental activity; 6) verbs of influence; 7) possessive semantic verbs; and 8) emotional and evaluating verbs. The author assessed tendencies in categorization of predicates and outlined the main ones. The usage of such a predicate compartmentalization provides possibility to compare two or more objects with the help of certain features and determine the intention of the author while creating the utterance. In this context, semantic predicate is regarded as a word’s parameter that can take different meaning in different situations and types of appliance. The core issue is to take into account referential and taxonomic status of actants.
