STRUCTURAL-FUNCTIONAL REALIZATION OF REPETITION IN THE TEXTS OF GERMAN FOLK FAIRY TALES AND ITS RENDERING IN THE UKRAINIAN TRANSLATION

Abstract

The article emphasizes that folklore discourse is characterized by a number of repetitions contributing to the action duration and intensity activation, and conveying significant additional information of emotionality, expressiveness and stylization. The article is devoted to the study of the peculiarities of repetitions at various levels that determine the German folk tale genre specificity. Repetitions have been analyzed at the phonetic, morphemic, lexical and syntactic language levels. Repetition is considered to be one of the most important elements in the structure of text-forming logical-semantic connections, and the most frequent means of linguistic stereotyping. Traditional formulae in the texts of German folk tales acquire the character of stable verbal formulae. Frequent, increasing repetition of the same action forms the so-called cumulative tales. Repetitions in cumulative fairy tales are of the same lexical and syntactic type. Repetition as a rhythmic-syntactic figure is considered to be a stylistic means of the emotional expressiveness increase of the fairy tale story. Lexical contact and distant repetitions have been noted to exist along with repetitions at the phonetic level. Distant repetitions create the text structure, act as a means of connection between different parts of the text, and serve as a way of organizing the sequence of the text components. At the lexical level, there are repetitions of different parts of speech to activate the corresponding semantic features: increasing the duration of action, the intensity of the feature manifestation, highlighting, and emphasizing the subject. The action development in a German folk tale is carried out by means of a distant repetition-pickup, which performs meaningful and structural functions. The same type of repetition is used when translating the text of a German folk tale into Ukrainian. Sometimes difficulties associated with adequate repetition rendering may arise. This is especially true of techniques and ways to achieve the poetic translation equivalence. The study has shown that a German folk tale text is characterized by repetition, which is manifested at different language levels, in different forms and with different degrees of intensity.
