ENGLISH DIALECTS IN THE AGE OF GLOBALIZATION: THE PECULIARITIES OF FUNCTIONING
Abstract
The article considers the peculiarities of functioning of English as a heterogeneous language which, at the present stage of the development of society, due to the latest impact of globalization processes, is used as means of verbal intercultural communication by the representatives of the majority of ethnic groups. The analysis is based on the material of English dialects. The research includes the study of the following issues: the direction and vector of development of the language situation in England in the past and today, the relation and redistribution of the usage of different varieties and language codes in a period of bilingualism, diglossia, in a globalized world. The results of the analysis allow to identify priority spheres of dialect use at different stages of the development of English society, to trace the dynamics of changes in the areas and modes of dialect (variety) use in diachrony, to identify the reasons for preserving and maintaining dialectal forms in a state of communicative suitability in diglossic language situation (when under the influence of a strict language policy dialects are banned in official spheres) and in a globalization period. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of dialect written documents on the grounds that written speech is the most conservative form of communication, thus, writing in dialects implies a clearly regulated use of language forms. The study identifies the most stable and productive dialect elements at all levels of the language system, and hypothesizes the reasons for the stability and actualization of dialects in oral and written speech in the age of globalization. One of the important areas of research is the development of regional and dialect lexicography. As it is shown in the article, modern lexicographic sources indicate the further development of regional dialects, which disproves the dominance of the literary form of the English language over the English dialects. In addition, attention is focused on language issues of communication between different cultures; the importance of incorporating the knowledge about regional and social variability of English into the classroom is stated. The latter includes not only archaic dialect features, but those ones which are actively used in various types of modern discourse: in social media and social networks, in particular. All in all, the global online nature of the English language expands the communicative space of dialect use.
