COVID-19 METAPHORS IN ENGLISH AND UKRAINIAN MEDIA DISCOURSE: GASTRONOMIC VOCABULARY OF HRYHORII SKOVORODA’S WORKS

Abstract

The article analyzes the gastronomic vocabulary of Hryhorii Skovoroda’s works as a vivid example of not only material, but also spiritual wealth. The study of writer’s poems, fables, dialogues, treatises and parables made it possible to analyze the peculiarities of culinary tastes of his characters. The dishes, which characters consumed and treated the guests are described in the article. The epistolary materials present interesting facts from the writer’s life related to food, his favorite dishes and drinks. Letters to his friends in different periods of the philosopher’s life testify his commitment to healthy eating. Medical literature and the works of ancient philosophers influenced Skovoroda’s ideas about physical and spiritual health from the consumption of food and alcoholic beverages. Attention is paid to the writer’s letters with useful advice on the diet peculiarities. Hryhorii Skovoroda’s letters to his student Mykhailo Kovalinskyi and friends have preserved many references to specific life incidents related to health conditions and diseases caused by improper nutrition. The writer’s recommendations with caution against overeating and abuse of intoxicating drinks, as well as advice on using cold and hot dishes, their medicinal and healing properties, are considered. The names of food products, which acquire symbolic meaning in philosopher’s works are analyzed. Examples of Ukrainian culinary folklore that the writer used as proverbs, sayings, aphorisms in his works are given. Based on the name of the food, they are divided into groups: food (product, dish, drink), property (taste). In addition, considerable attention is paid to the author’s ability not only to describe dishes, but also to reveal individual and typical traits of the characters.
