LANGUAGE MEANS OF ACTUALIZATION OF THE MYTHOLOGICAL AND RELIGIOUS ASPECTS OF THE NOVEL BY D. DEFOE "THE LIFE AND STRANGE SURPRISING ADVENTURES OF ROBINSON CRUSOE"

Abstract

The article focuses on the language means of actualisation the mythological and religious aspects of the novel by D. Defoe "The Life and Strange Adventures of Robinson Crusoe".

The results of the study indicate that mythology in the work is implicit, religious ideas are expressed, on the contrary, explicitly.

The mythological aspect is realized through the association of Robinson's adventures with the ritual of initiation (created by the semantic markers of the concept of "death" – "horror", "fire", "darkness", "spear in hand", "murder"), his life on the island – with the actions of the demiurge (due to the correlation with the concept "creator").

The biblical allusions are represented by symbolic figurative means (first of all, by similes and metaphors) and direct quotations, included in the literary text.

The association with the parable of the prodigal son becomes evident by the verbalisation of the idea of the identity of obedience to father and to God (the concepts "father" and "God" become almost synonymous), the lexical representation of the Christian semantic paradigm "sin – suffering – death", binary oppositions "top – down", "heaven – hell", "righteousness – sin", "life – death", expressive similes, metaphorical speculations about repentance and divine forgiveness, biblical quotations.

Robinson's misery is interpreted by comparison with the suffering of the biblical righteous – Job. The detailed analysis of the problem under consideration proves the prospects for further studies of the language means of representation of "eternal" texts, mythological, biblical subtext in the works of writers of world literature.
