LINGUOPRAGMATIC CHARACTERISTICS OF PUBLIC SPEECHES (THE CASE STUDY: TED TALKS REPORTS IN ENGLISH)

Abstract

The article aims at analyzing linguopragmatic peculiarities of public speeches. The case study is the most popular TED talks in English selected from 2012 to 2016. As a result of the study linguopragmatic characteristics in the correlation of the main requirements to popular TED talks have been pointed out.

Our research has confirmed a positive correlation of lingual features of the top TED performances and the basic requirements for TED speeches. The study identifies several vocabulary groups contributing to realizing of laconic informative and emotional persuasive linguopragmatic characteristic, neutral vocabulary and terminology serve to transfer the informative content, emotive vocabulary is used with the aim of establishing contact with the audience. This fact agrees with the general TED requirements: to present the information in an exciting way to attract the attention of the listeners.

We have found out that among the essential characteristics of TED speeches as the following: the use of different types of stylistic devices to amuse and interest the audience. The authors realize that novelty and extraordinary manner of presentation contributes to their success. The speakers humor and irony to make the listeners pay attention to their performances and think positive. The authors of TED speeches present various stories about their experience trying to involve the audience into their performance. They use different types of questions, which promotes speech interactivity. Our research has a wide range of prospects: to analyze stylistic means and devices used in TED performances, classify and present their typology, state the correlation of stylistic devices used and the popularity of the talk, to study different kinds of comic means, state the translation techniques identify challenging issues in the aspect of translation.
