PECULIARITIES OF BLENDS TRANSLATION IN THE FIELD OF INTERNET COMMUNICATION

Abstract

The article is dedicated to the study of the newest way of word formation called blending. The work is based on examples from the field of Internet communication. There is a great number of scholars who have investigated the processes of word formation in other fields. Paradoxically, blends in the field of Internet communication happen to be almost unknown to scholars, though these new words are quite interesting for research since they are not always easy to understand and translate.

The article explores the various mechanisms of blending. Among the literal models of blends formation, the most productive are the following: ab+cd=ad, ab+cd=ac, ab+cd=abd, ab+cd=acd. The most used blending models according to parts of speech are N+N=N, V+V=V, A+A=A. The authors establish that when translating blends in the field of Internet communication, the most used translation transformations are descriptive translation, transcoding (transcription, transliteration), calquing, as well as translation by a similar model. The difficulties involved in translating blended units were illustrated with a new phenomenon called Cat Puns or Catabulary. Since such newest formations have a situational, context-dependent character, the methods of their translation are narrowed to three: descriptive, calquing, and the one by a similar model. For each case with translation difficulties, a possible solution is provided.
