THE USAGE OF STYLISTIC TOOLS FOR CHARACTER DESCRIPTION: TRANSLATION ASPECT (BASED ON HOLLY BLACK’S NOVEL “THE CRUEL PRINCE”)

Abstract

The article focuses on methods and features of translation of fantasy genre works, in particular the stylistic means used to describe the series of novels by American writer Holly Black “The Cruel Prince”. In order to ensure that the literary text is adequate and understandable to the reader, translators need to use appropriate literary translation techniques. As a rule, works of fantasy genre use a variety of magical motifs, elements of the knighthood in combination with the modern world, realistic style of storytelling, supernatural and magical elements. Fantasy stories are often characterized by the presence of mythical creatures such as werewolves, elves, giants, gnomes and goblins. In the elaborated novel, the events take place among the relatively new to literature mythical creatures – fairies. The literature of this genre is significantly different from other genres of literature, so during its translation there are many difficulties. It is important to convey the appropriate atmosphere, mood, behavior of the characters, a kind of symbolism, which the author gave each of them, because they are the personification of people in the real world. To express such features, the authors usually use folklore, slang and dialect speech figures, which are difficult or sometimes impossible to translate from the source language to the target language. We should not use the technique of literal, machine translation to translate fiction, as its use can lead to the loss of a special coloring of the work, the real emotions and feelings of the characters. The stylistic aspect plays an important role in translation studies, as it serves as a means of achieving adequate translation of the text and expressing its features by the translator in the translation process. In the artistic style, the usage of tropes contributes to a better understanding of the text, their main role in the fiction is the pictorial aesthetics. The tropes include comparison, metaphor, epithet, metonymy, synecdoche, personification, allegory, etc. The style of fantasy literature genre is a special style that has developed in the system of literary English. In the process of translating English-language fantasy texts, the translator may face difficulties due to significant differences in the structures of English and Ukrainian, because they differ lexically and grammatically.
